Description

About 50 or so Starbucks straws cut and glued onto 16 x 20 canvas board.

For an environmental Green-themed gallery show at school.

My personal critique (you're free to interpret on your own):
Numerous companies have put on this façade of "going green" — encouraging recycling, using biodegradable materials; which, don't get me wrong, is a very positive change. Yet, these companies still give their customers an excessive amount of materials for a simple service, for example, coffee. I'm calling out Starbucks mainly because they're a giant and easy to poke fun of, and because their straws are green which makes for an oh-so-artsy twist! Tee hee!

When you consume a coffee (a simple pleasure item, something not necessary to the sustaining of life), you end up throwing away a cup, a lid, and a straw, among other things. That may seem insignificant, but when you multiply by the (I'm guessing here) one BILLION Starbucks in the U.S. alone, it adds up. If companies really want to be green, just use less materials. Those eventually-biodegradable cardboard cups have to come from somewhere. It's boring and inconvenient to carry your own coffee thermos into a Starbucks, but don't act like you care about the environment when you're sucking on a green straw. Are you really drinking it for the coffee or the subconscious image?

Feel free to tear me apart; my logic is far from flawless. I'd like to hear what you have to say.

I love the texture you've created using the straws, both geometric and vivid.
